Penalties for driving without insurance

Driving without insurance means taking a risky gamble with your life, and it will get you into trouble with the law if you are ever pulled over. Ironically, being caught without insurance can greatly impact your future car insurance quotes. Basically, it’s not worth it. The costs will pay for themselves in the long run.

There are many reasons why an officer may pull you over while driving. If you are speeding or committing some other moving violation, if you have a broken tail light, or if your car’s registration is out of date, these are all valid reasons for police to stop you. At that point, you will be asked to provide proof of insurance. This is considered a given.

If you are caught driving without insurance, there are two things that you can expect: you will be issued a ticket for the original offense that you were pulled over for, and then you will be fined for not having insurance. Fines can range anywhere from $150 to $1000. While the first may not seem like a big deal, the second can get really expensive. Why not spend that money on insurance in the first place?

Besides being fined, your car may be impounded, and your registration tag taken away. But this is nothing compared to the costs of actually getting into an accident without insurance. Imagine having to pay for the cost of another person’s car and hospital bills out of pocket, and you’ll get a pretty good idea of what you could face unless you get insured. For most, it would be the equivalent of financial ruin.

On top of paying for the repairs and medical bills of the person you hit should you cause an accident, you will also face a fine for not driving with insurance, and it will be a much larger fine than if you had merely been pulled over without insurance for a minor traffic violation. This doesn’t even take into account the cost of repairing your own vehicle and medical bills.

It’s simple: If you can’t afford to buy insurance, then you can’t afford to drive.  There are no guarantees in life. You may think you are above getting pulled over, or getting in an accident, but sooner or later you will probably run out of luck. Driving without insurance is not a temporary fix. If you get caught it will greatly affect your future auto insurance quotes, and tarnish your driving history—not to mention your wallet.
